the gambit of claiming "i don't know" slips from one's control because, at bottom, it is a lie, and lies metastasize; the universe is so tightly constructed that in order to cover one lie, we must usually tell another. this applies with just as much force to the lies we tell ourselves as to the lies we tell other people.
